Traditions of the Tower

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

The Tower of London, the historic fortress on the River Thames in London, has served numerous purposes through the ages (as a castle, fort, prison, menagerie, armory, the home of the crown jewels….. the list goes on). Built in the 11th century, the site is steeped in history and imbued with a dark and brooding façade, famously linked with the ominous presence of mysterious ravens. Legend has it that the ravens’ residence at the Tower is crucial to the preservation of the monarchy and empire. And their occupancy has become central to the Tower’s history. Charles II ordered that a minimum of six ravens be kept at the castle continuously and the tradition continues to this day.
