Long before Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears came along, Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Thoedore Roosevelt, was the darling of the media. They followed her every move, called attention to her hair, her clothes…… and her antics.

Alice’s mother died two days after she was born and her father left her in the care of his sister for much of her first few years. When he re-married and had five more kids, Alice and her step-mother had a stormy relationship. She grew into a beautiful young woman, always in the spotlight and was referred to as Princess Alice. Songs were written about her and even a color was named for her: Alice Blue. When asked about her unruly behavior, her father said, “I can either run the country or look after Alice. I can’t do both.”

She married a congressman fourteen years her senior and was active in the Washington DC scene her entire life – she was known for her parties and her wit. One famous quote: “If you can’t say something nice…. then come sit next to me.”
